February Maintenance Checklist – Things to do Around the House This Month!

Aside from Valentine’s day, February seems to be a pretty chill and relaxed month. Which is why we have listed down some home maintenance items to warm you up.

Get some chores done around the house, check out our list below! Here’s our February maintenance checklist!

Clean your furniture

While we’re pretty much stuck with inside maintenance this month, we might as well take care and clean our furniture!

If you aren’t doing it already, make sure to do some regular dusting to keep your furniture clean. Use a soft clean cloth or microfiber cloth for dusting, cleaning, and polishing. Your furniture will thank you later!

For upholstered furniture, remove any loose cushion and vacuum/brush the fabric gently. As for their wooden counterparts, use a furniture polish or a mix of olive oil and lemon juice to clean most of the surfaces.

In general, try to avoid using harsh chemicals and use a damp cloth instead. This will help extend the life of your furniture.

Deep clean your garbage disposal

Then onto the kitchen! Don’t wait for your garbage disposal to develop a funky smell before deciding to deep clean it.

Safety first! Make sure to turn off the power to avoid any accidents. Then, by using a long brush or tongs, remove any visible debris from inside the disposal. Next, fill the garbage disposal with ice cubes and a cup of salt and turn it back on. The ice and the salt will help scrub the interior and remove any remaining food particles.

Use lemon quarters and drop them into the disposal to deodorize and neutralize any unwanted scent. Then run some hot water for a few minute to rinse away any remaining debris. Repeat these steps as needed and do a deep clean every few months.

Replace all your air filters

Next on our February maintenance checklist is changing your air filters. Improve the air quality in your home by replacing every filter regularly.

Identify the type of filter that you need. Take a picture of the filter on your HVAC before running out to the store to make sure you have a reference. The recommended frequency to replace your air filters is every 90 days so make sure you get some extra when you get replacement filters from your local hardware store.

Don’t forget to replace any filters on your window type AC’s, and range hood and stove tops!

Get ahead on spring cleaning

One way to feel less overwhelmed come spring time is to plan ahead. Get some of the things out of the way this month like organizing your bookshelves and cleaning out your closet.

Organize your bookshelves by category, such as fiction, non-fiction, and cookbooks etc. Make sure to put the heavier, bigger items at the bottom. Don’t be afraid to mix it up – alternate directions, stack your books, add some tchotchkes if you have the space! Finally, declutter and remove any book you no longer need or want to keep. Consider donating to your local library or participate in a trade-in program at your local bookstore.

Next up is the closet! Before we put away our cold weather clothes, it might be a good idea to declutter and donate some of the clothes that no longer *cue Marie Kondo voice* spark joy.

Start planning for a spring/summer home sale

Finally, the last on our February maintenance checklist! If you are planning on moving soon and considering putting your house for sale this coming Spring, then you better get started planning for it!

We are not just saying this to self-promote, but now is the time to reach out to a real estate agent *ehem, us*. We can help you take it one step at a time so you can better focus on your move/home search.

Additionally, you can also work on decluttering your home now by selling or donating any furniture or items you would not want to bring with you to your new home.

If you are considering or are planning to sell your home, there is no better time than today to start planning. Reach out now and we can help you navigate your next steps!
