Dealing with water damage and house fires can be a stressful and overwhelming experience. In such situations, having a plan and knowledge about what steps to take can make a big difference in reducing stress and expediting the restoration process. That’s where SERVPRO, a restoration company, comes in with their expert tips.
Scroll down to check out three SERVPRO Pro-tips for dealing with water damage and house fires.
If you ever have the unfortunate experience of having a water loss in your home, there are a few things you should do. Firstly, find the source of the water flooding your house, whether it’s a burst pipe or your water heater letting go, and use your main water shut off valve. Then, call a plumber to assess and fix the issue. If the source of water is a roof leak, call a roofer for a patch. At this point, the next step would be to bring in a restoration company to handle the drying, restoration of any damaged materials, and any reconstruction if needed.
The tragedy of a house fire can affect any of us unexpectedly. First things first, remove yourself and any loved ones from the structure while it is ablaze. Once you and your loved ones are in a safe location, proceed to call the fire department and wait for help to arrive.
While you are waiting for the fire department to finish their work, your next call should be to your insurance company to begin filing a claim. Once a claim has been filed, you are going to need to hire a few people to deal with the aftermath of the fire. The first will be a board-up company. These companies will board up any holes made by the fire itself or the fire department to make sure outside elements and looters do not make the situation worse after the fire has been put out. They will also tarp off the roof if necessary.
Then, you will need to hire a restoration company to clean up fire damage, water damage from extinguishing the fire, and any debris caused by the fire or the efforts to put it out. Finally, you will need to hire a reconstruction company. Some restoration companies, such as SERVPRO, can do the reconstruction work as well.
When a fire occurs, often there will be “fire chasers.” These are people who work for board-up, restoration companies, and public adjusters. These are all necessary jobs, and these people are simply doing their job. Unfortunately, some less savory characters may be involved in those industries and may try to pressure you to hire them on the spot. We suggest hiring a board-up company on the day of the fire and proceeding to speak to your insurance company and doing your research before hiring one no less than 24 hours after the fire.
These events are highly stressful, but having a plan and the knowledge of who to call and what to do will greatly reduce that feeling. It will also help expedite the process and ensure the optimal resolution of whatever the issue is.
